May Day UPDAte

5/26/2022 6:36 pm

Dear Families,

We are looking forward to having you join us for May Day tomorrow. This is the 40th year of this tradition and after missing it for two years, it feels good to pick it back up. We are doing some things differently than we have before and we ask for your patience, flexibility, and understanding.

What if it is raining? We will send out an eblast and phone call at 7:15 if May Day will be postponed. IF it is postponed, it will be held Tuesday morning.

Where is May Day? May Day will take place tomorrow Friday, May 27 at 8:00 am (to beat the rain!) on the grassy outfield of the softball field behind our school. Gates will open at 7:45 for parents to arrive. You are welcome to park across the street after dropping off your student, but we cannot allow entrance to the field until all students are safely in class.

*Important weather announcement: If there is rain tomorrow we will postpone May Day and have it on Tuesday, May 31. We will be making that decision by 7:15 am tomorrow and will send out another parent notification email.

Where do visitors park? Parents park across from JBE on the lawn of the Krispy Kreme house. Parking in the gravel lots of this house is prohibited and will result in a boot and $25 fine. Parents who live in Parish Place, Wakendaw, Point Pleasant are strongly encouraged to walk to JBE for May Day to help avoid added traffic. We will have the back gate unlocked for easy access.

Where do visitors sit? Below is a "map" of how the outfield will look for May Day. The VIP Tent is for the town council, retired teachers, and district officials. The VIP tent is NOT for parents. Parents need to bring their own chairs and sit BEHIND all the grade levels.

Teachers will sit with their classes. All classes/students will need to bring beach towels out on the grass to sit on. We are not bringing out chairs for students to sit on.

What do students wear? Each grade level will be wearing a different color for May Day. This means students do not have to wear a JBE shirt on May Day. Students will need sunglasses, hats, sunscreen, and water bottles with them. Just remember it will be hot!

Child Development: Students can dress up as cowboys/police/army/construction/etc. think village people Kindergarten: Students can wear yellow.

First Grade: Students can wear red.

Second Grade: Students can wear blue. Each student needs a hand towel for their performance/choreography. Hand towels can be any color/pattern.

Third Grade: Students can wear orange

Fourth Grade: Students can wear white. (think Kevin Bacon from Footloose)

Fifth Grade: Students will be dressed in their May Pole attire for the entire event. A letter about May Pole attire was sent home earlier this year. If you need another copy, please let me know.

Restrooms: Officer Ransom will have the restrooms at the press box on the softball unlocked for parent use.

Dismissal of MAY DAY

May Day will last approximately 2 hours. Once May Day is finished, students and teachers will be dismissed by grade level. Order of dismissal: CD, K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th. Fifth-grade parents can take pictures of their child next to the May Poles after grades CD-4 are safely in the building. Parents must remain seated while students are being dismissed.

Important safety information Every adult will have to sign in at the back of the school before walking into the gated area. We will also have an additional Mt. Pleasant police office on campus for added security. It will be HOT. Please remember appropriate attire for students and visitors. Hats, water, sunscreen, and sunglasses are highly encouraged.

Can I sign my child out after May Day? Many parents will want to sign their student out early on May Day. After all students are back inside the building, parents can leave the field, walk to their child's exterior door and sign their student out. Teachers will have a sign-out sheet for parents.

Sincerely,

Principal Fountain

Message from Principal Fountain

5/25/2022 7:35 am

Dear Families,

I am still shaken by the news of the Texas school shooting. I wish that this heinous violence didn't exist; it is heart-wrenching. However, I am reaching out to you to assure you that JBE has a robust safety and security plan, guided by CCSD's Safety and Security Management Team. The Safety and Security Management Team comes to JBE randomly and multiple times a year to assess our level of safety. They check gates, doors, and windows, and look for any weak spots. They are thorough and we always receive specific and informative feedback. Please watch this video on their website to learn about protocols we utilize to keep your children safe.

Now go hug your children, while they lay peacefully in bed, and count your blessings as you relax knowing your JBE family will show up again in the morning and do every possible thing to keep your children safe.

Sincerely,

Principal Fountain
